One of my favorite things to do when I travel is to visit grocery stores.

Whether I'm strolling the endless dairy aisle in a French supermarket, admiring colorful produce displays in Guatemala, or exploring the endless new-to-me fruit and vegetable ingredients in Thailand, grocery stores tell me more about a place than almost anything else. You learn what people value, what they cook, and how they live their daily lives.

That's why one of the first questions I get from people relocating to Central Oregon is surprisingly simple:

"Where do you grocery shop around here?"

The answer depends on what you're looking for. Bend has everything from familiar national chains to regional favorites to locally owned markets that have become community institutions. Here's a quick guide to some of the stores you'll want to know when you arrive.

For Everyday Convenience

You'll find familiar names like Safeway and Albertsons throughout Bend. These are great options for weekly shopping, pharmacy services, and grabbing essentials close to home.

Ask long-time Bend residents about their favorite grocery store and you'll hear Newport Avenue Market mentioned again and again.

Located on Bend's west side, Newport Market has been serving the community for decades and has earned a reputation as one of Central Oregon's premier food destinations. The store is known for its exceptional produce department, featuring a stunning produce wall that has become something of a local landmark. Beyond the beautiful fruits and vegetables, you'll find specialty groceries, local products, artisan cheeses, fresh seafood, an outstanding deli, and plenty of hard-to-find ingredients.

My Advice

When you're new to Central Oregon, try them all.

Each store has its own personality, and before long you'll discover your favorites. Some people split their shopping between Fred Meyer for staples, Market of Choice for specialty items, and Newport Market when they want the very best produce. And yes, we also have Trader Joe's! (And rumor has it we're getting a second?!)
